Toho Eizo Bijutsu Co., Ltd. (株式会社東宝映像美術 Kabushiki Gaisha Tōhō Eizō Bijutsu, lit. "Toho Visual Art Co., Ltd.") is a Japanese art and video production company owned by Toho Co., Ltd.
Amid major restructuring of Toho in 1970, the company's Art Department, which had been established that year as a replacement for the Art Section of its Production Department, was incorporated as its own company: Toho Bijutsu Co., Ltd. (東宝美術株式会社 Tōhō Bijutsu Kabushiki Gaisha, lit. "Toho Art Co., Ltd."), lead by Kazuo Nishino. A year later, another short-lived department, the Video Department, was also separately incorporated as Toho Eizo Co., Ltd. (東宝映像株式会社 Tōhō Eizō Kabushiki Gaisha, lit. "Toho Visual Co., Ltd."), lead by Tomoyuki Tanaka. Toho Eizo, which was partially composed of personnel from Toho's defunct Special Technology Section, was placed in charge of creating special effects films for its parent company, while yet another subsidiary, Toho Pictures, would handle all other films. Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), which finished shooting about a month before Toho Eizo's formation, was the final tokusatsu film for which Toho produced the effects itself. Toho and Toho Eizo collaborated on the next Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), with the latter shooting the effects. By Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973), Toho Eizo took over all manner of production on the series.
In 1975, Tomoyuki Tanaka became the president of Toho Pictures, and by 1978, Toho Bijutsu president Kazuo Nishino had taken up Toho Eizo from him. Toho Eizo continued to produce special effects films into the early '80s, but management of the films soon followed Tanaka to Toho Pictures. Bye-Bye Jupiter, The Return of Godzilla (both 1984), and Princess from the Moon (1987) were produced by Toho Pictures, with Toho Eizo returning to special effects production. On June 1, 1988, Toho Eizo merged with Toho Bijutsu to form Toho Eizo Bijutsu. This incarnation of the company continued to produce special effects for Toho Pictures into the 1990s, including on the remainder of the Heisei Godzilla series (1989–95), Gunhed (1989), Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon (1994), and the three Rebirth of Mothra films (1996–98). Toho Pictures completely took over shooting of the Godzilla series with Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999), though Toho Eizo Bijutsu still contributed production design to all of the Millennium films ('99–2004). The company continues to work in an artistic capacity on films, TV, and attractions, while also occasionally producing its own video content, including a handful of recent Godzilla short films.
