GKIDS Inc.,[b] an acronym for Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate,[5][4] is an American film distribution company known for bringing foreign productions to stateside theaters and home video. Headquartered in New York City, it was incorporated in Delaware on August 7, 2006,[1][2] by Eric Beckman as a spin-off of the New York International Children's Film Festival, which he founded in 1997.[8]

The company's licenses largely consist of animated works, especially Japanese anime. Among its catalog are numerous Studio Ghibli properties, from its predecessor Topcraft's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) to its most recent film, The Boy and the Heron (2023); Hideaki Anno et al.'s Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (TV 199091), Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV 199596) and nearly all related films, Love & Pop (1998), and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- (2025); and select films by Mamoru Oshii, Satoshi Kon, Makoto Shinkai, and more.

On October 15, 2024, Japanese studio Toho announced it had closed a deal to acquire GKIDS and convert it into a subsidiary of the U.S.-based Toho International,[7] doing so on October 17.[9] Through this arrangement GKIDS became involved with the Godzilla series, first bringing 4K remasters of Shin Godzilla (2016) and its black-and-white version SHIN GODZILLA: ORTHOchromatic (2023) to theaters and Blu-ray in 2025. In 2026, it was announced as the North American distributor of Godzilla Minus Zero (2026), succeeding Minus One (2023) distributor Toho International.[10]

Notes

  1. According to the records of the Delaware and New York State Departments of State.[1][2] A founding of 2007 is claimed by the company's LinkedIn[3] and 2008 by some news outlets;[4] 2008 was the year it released its first film, Tahaan.[5]
  2. The company refers to itself as GKIDS, Inc.[7] or GKIDS, INC.,[6] with a comma, but it is registered with the Delaware and New York State Departments of State without one.[1][2]
