TOHO Studios Co., Ltd. (TOHOスタジオ株式会社 Tōhō Sutajio Kabushiki Gaisha) is a subsidiary company and film production arm of Toho Co., Ltd. It began life amidst major restructuring of Toho, whose production division became incorporated as a separate company named Toho Pictures, Inc. (株式会社東宝映画 Kabushiki Gaisha Tōhō Eiga) in 1971. This resulted in Toho ceasing to produce films or other media directly, instead entrusting this to Toho Pictures and other subsidiary or sister companies, while continuing to provide distribution and sporadic financing.
Toho Pictures' early work included some of Toho's special effects–heavy offerings, for which it shot the human drama while leaving the effects to another subsidiary, Toho Eizo. Initially this did not include the Godzilla films, which were wholly produced by Toho Eizo from 1973 to 1975, due to its president being franchise creator Tomoyuki Tanaka. This changed with 1984's The Return of Godzilla, which was produced following Tanaka's joining of Toho Pictures in 1975 and promotion to chairman in 1978. This and all subsequent Godzilla films until 1995 utilized a similar arrangement as earlier tokusatsu, with Toho Pictures shooting the dramatic portions as well as providing funding, and Toho Eizo (renamed Toho Eizo Bijutsu in 1988) handling the effects.
In 1999, Toho Eizo Bijutsu was significantly downsized and relieved of its effects duties, leaving Toho Pictures to take up all manner of production on the Godzilla series' Millennium era, which lasted until 2004.[3] In 2016, Toho Pictures and Cine Bazar co-produced the first live-action Japanese Godzilla film in over a decade, Shin Godzilla, with financing now handled by Toho itself. On December 1, 2020, Toho Pictures finalized a merge with Toho Studios Service Co., Ltd. (株式会社東宝スタジオサービス Kabushiki Gaisha Tōhō Sutajio Sābisu)—a subsidiary established in 2005 to operate Toho's shooting facilities—to become TOHO Studios.[4] The renamed company reunited with Cine Bazar for Shin Ultraman in 2022, and also produced 2023's Godzilla Minus One with ROBOT.
