The 12 Day Tale of the Monster that Died in 8 evolved out of Kaiju Defeat COVID, an online challenge started by Shinji Higuchi.[3] As described by Mark Schilling in The Japan Times, "The idea is to 'catch' an invisible monster (Higuchi thoughtfully demonstrates), 'magically' fuse it with your own monster and send the now strengthened beast hurling toward the camera (but not, Higuchi reminds us, hitting it) to crush the virus."[2]

Trivia
The 12 Day Tale of the Monster that Died in 8 is the first black and white kaiju film since Space Monster Wangmagwi in 1967.
Saito's capsule kaiju are named after medications which were under study as COVID-19 treatments when the film was made: the antiviral medicines Avigan and Remdesivir and the antiparasitic medicine Ivermectin. The concept of capsule kaiju itself comes from the TV series Ultraseven; accordingly, Saito sculpts his creatures into the faces of Miclas, Windom, and Agira.
