The Godzilla 1983 Revival Festival (ゴジラ1983 復活フェスティバル) was an event held by Toho and supervised by Tomoyuki Tanaka from August 6-26, 1983 that screened 10 of their kaiju and tokusatsu films. It was followed a year later by the release of The Return of Godzilla.
History

The Godzilla 1983 Revival Festival is the last of five Toho kaiju and tokusatsu re-releases that took place between the releases of Terror of Mechagodzilla and The Return of Godzilla (excluding the Toho Champion Festival) which included the Toho Masterpiece Series No. 5 in 1976, Godzilla's 25th Anniversary: Godzilla Complete Works in 1979, the 1980 re-release of Mothra vs. Godzilla, and the Toho Half-Century Masterpiece Fair in 1982. These various events prompted fan anticipation for a new Godzilla film.[1]
The event would begin preparation in April 1983 with Tomoyuki Tanaka as the general supervisor. The June 8th Yomiuri Shimbun evening edition newspaper reported that Toho was aiming to release a new Godzilla film in the summer of 1984, but wouldn't give the go-ahead until seeing how this event turned out. The event ran from August 6-26, 1983 and screened new prints of previous Toho kaiju and tokusatsu films in double-bills. On the opening day at the Shinjuku Milano Theater in Tokyo Tomoyuki Tanaka, Shinpei Hayashiya, and Akihiko Hirata attended with the latter dressed up as Dr. Serizawa. A replica MosuGoji suit, commissioned by the Godzilla Revival Comittee and sculpted by Fuyuki Shinada, also made an appearance after first appearing for the Toho Half-Century Masterpiece Fair a year earlier.[2] A theater program was made for the event detailing the plots and history of the films screened and advertising Toho Video's VHS releases[3] along with the book Complete History of Toho Tokusatsu Movies.[4] The event was a resounding success with fans and further signaled to Toho that a new Godzilla film was in high demand.[2]
