This page is about an unproduced direct sequel to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. For the unproduced proposal for the 12th Godzilla film, see The Return of King Ghidorah!. For the similarly-titled Zone Fighter episode, see "King Ghidorah's Counterattack!".

The Return of King Ghidorah (キングギドラの逆襲,   Kingu Gidora no Gyakushū, lit. "King Ghidorah's Counterattack") is an unproduced proposed direct sequel to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Intended to feature Godzilla battling a second, extraterrestrial King Ghidorah following the events of the previous film, it was ultimately abandoned in favor of a series of proposals which culminated in the 1992 film Godzilla vs. Mothra.

Plot

A space monster comes down to Earth and begins terrorizing the planet. This creature appears to have a striking resemblance to King Ghidorah, a monster created by the Futurians that attacked Japan last year, and was given the same name as a result. Humanity must now rely on Godzilla to stop the new King Ghidorah before the Earth is destroyed.

History

Due to the success of 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Toho initially considered producing a direct sequel to the film, featuring a version of King Ghidorah from outer space, similar to the character's Showa incarnation. Ultimately, Toho decided to instead revive one of Toho's other most popular monsters, Mothra, and ended up producing the film that ultimately became Godzilla vs. Mothra.
