Gamera (
History
The project was pitched in 2006 as a 26-episode series. It would have included not only Showa era kaiju, but the obscure Garasharp and Marukobukarappa, as well as an original "Mechanical Gamera corps." Its theme song would have been called "Shambhala-Ya Gamera!" (シャンバラヤ牙滅羅! Shanbaraya Gamera!). The series was ultimately never made, and would not be made public knowledge until August 18, 2023, when artist Yoshitomo Yonetani released a short description and three pieces of concept art for it on his X account.[1]
Development
According to concept art, Gamera's design was heavily based on the Showa era incarnation of the character, but with additional influences from sea turtles, especially the Hawksbill sea turtle. He also possesses markings akin to the pond slider, greenish coloration, tile-like scales, holes in each limb to emit jets, blood vessel-esque ducts connected to his eyes, ivory-like tusks, fins on each limb, and a neck resembling "Bae Yong-joon's neck gaiter". His fire blast is accompanied by Fire Rings (ファイヤーリング Faiyā Ringu) resembling bubble rings generated by the Beluga whale.[1]

Trivia
- A different, American-produced Gamera animated series was announced in 2005 with plans to air on Cartoon Network in 2007, but this too never came to fruition.[2]
- Yoshitomo Yonetani's Betterman, specifically Betterman Aqua, may have inspired elements of Zigra from the later Gamera anime GAMERA -Rebirth-.
- An unidentified horned monster in one of the concept pieces bears a resemblance to Umiushi[3] and Monga, monsters which were scrapped from Gamera vs. Viras and Gamera vs. Guiron.
- A flying yellow submarine in the same illustration is based on the Expo '70 mini submarine stolen by Hiroshi and Tommy in Gamera vs. Jiger.
- Also in the illustration is a flying battleship named Kurotake (
玄 武 ), an alternate pronunciation of the Japanese name for the Black Tortoise (玄 武 Genbu). - In his tweet about the series, Yonetani repeats a common misconception that Garasharp is a "shelved monster." In reality, the character was created for the 1991 direct-to-video short Gamera vs. Garasharp.
