King Ghidorah (キングギドラ,   Kingu Gidora) is the name of at least two separate[1] three-headed dragon kaiju who appeared in the IDW Publishing comics Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth.

Name

Main article: King Ghidorah#Name.

The "Ghidorah" (ギドラ,   Gidora) part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ,   Hidora), which shares two of its three katakana characters with "Ghidorah."

Design

In Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, the first King Ghidorah resembles the Millennium incarnation to reflect its role as a "guardian" beast awakened by a monk, though by contrast, its eyes are completely red and the numerous protruding textures are emphasized, evoking a more menacing look. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, King Ghidorah's design was changed to reflect the 1991 incarnation in order to accommodate its transformation into Mecha-King Ghidorah[1]. Its wings had sustained tremendous damage from the creature's fight in Washington, D.C., visibly ripped to bones and torn skin.

The second King Ghidorah that attacked the Cryog homeworld appears identical to the Showa King Ghidorah, befitting to its portrayal as a malevolent alien that destroys planets. In contrast, this individual possesses glowing orange eyes with red sclera, a comparatively wider upper body, a third crescent-shaped horn between the other two horns on each head like the Millennium incarnation, stringy manes, developed brow ridges, visibly more flexible necks, and a more saturated, yellow hide. The middle and left heads sprout tiny, pale yellow colored horns on their brow ridges. The right head retains these horns, but they match the brow ridges' color instead.

Personality

The first King Ghidorah was awoken by a monk who intended on protecting those who had suffered at the hands of the kaiju ravaging the world. Immediately after being awoken, the monster ventured directly to Godzilla's location to stop the beast. Despite Mechagodzilla entering the battle, King Ghidorah completely focused on Godzilla, suggesting the monk's beliefs to be true and that the three-headed dragon was indeed a guardian attempting to protect humanity from Godzilla's wrath.

The second King Ghidorah was a prominently destructive being that laid waste to the Cryogs' homeworld, departing once satisfied with the destruction.

Origins

In Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, the first King Ghidorah was awoken by a monk in a temple deep within an Asian mountain range, its origins never explored. Like other kaiju in the series, its emergence was preceded by the mass die-off of animals, snakes in this case. Prior to being turned into Mecha-King Ghidorah in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth by the Cryog, the psychic twins Minette and Mallory brought Rhizon to the monster's unconscious remains, having heard of it but never witnessed it personally. To accommodate for its corporal damage, King Ghidorah was revitalized by the Cryogs before the upgraded Gigan sliced off the central head, after which, the original body parts were replaced with mechanical ones.

The second King Ghidorah was a spacefaring monster that laid waste to worlds such as the Cryogs' home planet.

History

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #7

In a temple deep within a mountain range in Asia, a monk reading ancient texts was suddenly disturbed by the appearance of a dying snake, which the monk took as a sign that the "Dragon King" was awakening. Venturing out through the mountains and encountering numerous snakes along the way, he soon located his destination – a temple built around a massive stone mountain bearing the resemblance of a three-headed dragon. Within the temple, the monk proceeded to sacrifice himself for those who have suffered, at which point the three-headed King Ghidorah burst forth from the stone, seemingly revived by the monk's sacrifice. King Ghidorah then flew across the globe to confront Godzilla as he was leveling Washington, D.C.

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #8

Shortly after arrival, King Ghidorah struck first, using his Gravity Beams to send Godzilla flying backwards. However, Godzilla recovered and tackled King Ghidorah to the ground before blasting him with his atomic breath. The three-headed dragon retaliated by restraining Godzilla with two of his heads while firing a Gravity Beam point-blank with the third, though this did little but enrage his foe. In his fury, Godzilla unleashed an atomic beam so powerful that it left a mushroom cloud in its wake; when the dust settled, King Ghidorah was revealed to have been knocked unconscious.

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #10

Sometime later, King Ghidorah awoke to find Godzilla battling Mechagodzilla, piloted by Steven Woods. To Steven's surprise, King Ghidorah did not attack him and instead flew over Mechagodzilla to reengage Godzilla, prompting his copilot Allie to suggest that the dragon could be their ally. Unwilling to take a chance, however, Steven fired Mechagodzilla's shock anchors into both Godzilla and King Ghidorah, electrocuting them. As the monsters were being electrocuted, Steven also unleashed Mechagodzilla's most powerful weapon - the Plasma Grenade, which ultimately defeated both monsters and left them lying unconscious in the rubble.

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #11

King Ghidorah still was lying down in the rubble, and unlike Godzilla, was unconscious still.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

"King for a Day"

Some time after King Ghidorah's defeat at the hands of Mechagodzilla and Godzilla, the psychic twins Minette and Mallory brought the Cryog leader, Rhizon, to the dragon's remains. Wishing to revitalize and employ the monster, Rhizon had Gigan sever King Ghidorah's center head before his subordinates converted it into the cyborg, Mecha-King Ghidorah. Following its eventual defeat, Mecha-King Ghidorah fled Earth and ventured into outer space, with the Cryog speculating that he was seeking out other members of his kind.

"Battlecry"

While speaking with Emperor Karkaro, Rhizon recalled how their home planet was attacked by another member of King Ghidorah's species[1] - one that proved far more powerful than the King Ghidorah of Earth. As this individual laid waste to their homeworld, Emperor Karkaro fled, abandoning the rest of his race for dead, though Rhizon was able to lead some survivors to safety before the three-headed monstrosity was finished with the destruction.

Weaknesses

More to be added.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, the first King Ghidorah's central head was easily sliced off by the upgraded Gigan. Later on, the damage sustained in the battle with Godzilla and Anguirus severed the Cryogs and Minette and Mallory's control over Mecha-King Ghidorah, allowing the freed cyborg dragon to retreat to space. Mecha-King Ghidorah's Gravity Beams did little harm to Godzilla's skin

The second King Ghidorah lacks any specified weaknesses.

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Frank, Matt (27 April 2017). "If you recall, the Cryog found Ghidorah in the rubble of Washington, which is the Ghidorah that Godzilla fought in KOM. But the designs are different because we had to use the '91 KG heads with the MKG design. As they said in the comic, there are multiple Ghidorah species. So the one that attacked the Cryog world was another of its kind". Tumblr.
